If we determine the level of success for a policy in the Middle East to be based on US foreign policy assumptions, then the result; the US has lost the ‘War on Terror’. If we consider what makes a successful US foreign policy to be comprised of American exceptionalism and to demonstrate how sustainable said policy is, then this too has been a failure for the US. This framework has many flaws mainly that of unsustainability due to their effects in Middle Eastern countries and in the international sphere i.e. in terms of creating or maintaining allies, and brings into question the US position on the UN Security Council. When looking at the policy enacted in the Middle East, for instance the use of drones and assassinations, it not only highlights how unsustainable foreign policy can be to not only those directly affected by it, i.e. Middle Eastern countries, but how this may influence public opinion at home and in international communities. American foreign policy in the Middle East as part of the ‘War on Terror’ has been unsuccessful and unsustainable as it breeds intergenerational hatred towards the US, encourages recruitment in terrorist organisations, and will attract future attacks on US soil.
