To what extent have Socialists been committed to equality of outcome?

Equality of outcome is a state in which people have approximately the same material wealth or in which the general economic conditions of their lives are similar. Achieving equal results generally involves reducing or eliminating previous material inequalities between individuals or households in a society, and usually involves the transfer of wealth from wealthier to poorer individuals, or adopting other measures to promote equality of condition. Socialists are therefore generally committed to equality of outcome because of their firm belief in equality as one of the key values of society, apart from perhaps the exception of Neo-Revisionists who believe in it to a different extent. Socialists support equality of outcome because equality of outcome leads to people cooperating with each other and elevating social cohesion, because they hold the same status in society and will believe in working for the common good of society. This will reduce the sort of aggressive competition associated with capitalism and individualism. Equality of outcome is also significantly fairer, where it can clearly be seen today that the current system doesn’t work, equality of outcome evens out society, providing for everyone. It leads to everyone’s material needs being satisfied, because if resources are shared fairly, everyone will have enough. An example of this cooperation, would be the various cooperatives set up in the late 19^th century across England, the Rochdale Pioneers being a good example of this. It allowed people to get what they needed, with their material needs satisfied. Therefore, Socialists have committed to equality as they see it as the natural, fair process.
