This question would be answered through a process in which the student and I discuss the events of the novel and, using the whiteboard, produce a table in which we list what we decide are the main themes of the novel. After the discussion has stopped producing new themes, I will add to the table any further themes that did not arise from the discussion. Some of the themes of The Great Gatsby include 'The American Dream', enduring love, class (particularly the difficult of transitioning between classes), the influence of history on the present and masculinity. The table that the student and I have built will have two further columns. I will ask the student to think about any possible moments in the text that address any of the key themes. Key moments and quotations will go in the second column. The justification for why any example from the text addresses a theme will go in the third column. This process will enable the student to think critically and to make connections between different moments in the text. So too, the table will be a resource for future revision.
