How do I structure an essay?

I find that clarity is the most important thing in essay writing. Knowing exactly what point you are trying to make is something I feel is often overlooked. Personally, it helps me to draw out a rough plan that highlights each of my points so I know the shape of my essay. I also always read a draft out loud as this will often reveal anything that doesn't quite make sense and lead to a much more cohesive argument.
