How to form the subjunctive in Spanish.

The subjunctive is a 'mood' which expresses desire, emotion, doubts, the abstract and unknowns. Sentences which require the subjunctive usually have three main features: there is more than one subject (I want you to do something) , a relative pronoun linking the sentence (such as que) and a verb which is a 'trigger' for the subjunctive. Verbs which trigger the subjunctive can be remembered using WEIRDO: Wishes, Emotions, Impersonal phrases, Recommendations, Doubt, Ojalá. We will go through some examples of these cases. Once you have identified a sentence which requires the subjunctive, the stem is formed by using the 'yo' form of the present tense minus the 'o' ending. To this you then add the subjunctive endings: AR: e/es/e/emos/éis/en AR/IR: a/as/a/amos/áis/an. E.g. hablar -> habl(o) -> hable -> hable/hables/hable/hablemos/habléis/hablen
