How should I go about planning an essay question in an exam situation?

Firstly, it is important that you breakdown the question by making sure you understand exactly what it is asking of you, as this will allow you to have a clear idea of what exactly you need to write and what you should try to include in your argument. Begin by highlighting keywords in the question, such as a specific time period or reference to a specific event, person or place or even a law or act. Noting down any initial thoughts you have about what you might answer to the question would also be a useful place to start.I would then suggest that you create a clear and concise plan which will guide your answer. Having a good plan will give you peace of mind as you can refer back to it whilst you are writing your answer and can use it to make sure that you are staying on track. In this plan you might make a brief note of the main line of argument you will use, and will then create a number of smaller points which will form the main body/paragraphs of your answer. It might also be useful to make a quick note about what you might put in your conclusion to tie any loose ends of your argument up.
