What is active transport?

Active transport is the transport of substances against their concentration gradient with the use of energy. Molecules naturally flow down their concentration gradient, ie. from where they are more concentrated to where they are less concentrated, in order to establish balance. Active transport uses energy to maintain a strong concentration of a molecule on one side of a plasma membrane and a weak concentration on the other.
