How do you approach the translation of a sentence?

You start by finding the verbs. Once you found them, you start looking at the structure of the sentence and the relations between the propositions it's composed of – which one is the main clause, which are the subordinate clauses and what kind, and so on. This can be done by looking at the kinds of verbs in the individual propositions, and also by looking at the conjunctions in the sentence. Once the structure of the sentence is clear, look at the individual clauses. Analyse each part of each clause: find the subject, the object, and other complements. You can then look at the meanings of the words and, keeping in mind the grammatical structure of the clauses, you can translate the whole sentence clause by clause.
