How do I go about writing and analysis on live performance?

When writing an analysis on a live theatre performance, it is important to show the examiner that you have a secure understanding of the form and style of the production, an awareness of the aims of the production and an awareness of how well these aims are achieved through elements such as sound, lighting, set and the actor's performance.Begin your introduction by outlining these things:The style and form of the production (naturalistic, non-naturalistic, surrealist etc)A brief synopsis of the play (keep this very short as the examiner is more interested in your analysis than a re-telling of the story)Where the play is set (modern day? Elizabethan era? Victorian era?)The staging (was it performed on proscenium arch? traverse?)The aims of the performance and how they were achieved (outline the elements of the performance that you will analyse in your essay)Each paragraph after should focus on one specific moment where you think the production achieved this successfully. Be sure to be precise with your chosen moment and be DETAILED in your response. For example, if you are talking about the use of sound, tell the examiner: was it a short sound effect or an underscore? was it live or recorded? did the sound increase in volume or tempo? was it in a major or minor key? Then show the examiner you understand how this added to the overall aims of the production and the impact it had on you and the audience.
