What is the structure of an atom?

An atom has a nucleus that consists of neutral particles called neutrons and positively charged particles called protons. The nucleus is what gives the atom its mass. Around the nucleus there are shells filled with negatively charged particles called electrons. Valence electrons are electrons in the most outer shell, and they take part in chemical reactions.
