In humans, males are XY and females are XX. Why are sex-linked characteristics more common in males than females?

The recessive allele is always expressed in males, whereas females need two recessive alleles (homozygous recessive). Females could have dominant and recessive alleles, which would mean they are carriers, but would not express the recessive allele.
