Explain the arguments in favour of a proportional electoral system.

Define 'Proportional Representation' - an electoral system where parties gain seats in proportion to the amount of votes they received from the electorateWhat are the benefits?the wishes of the electorate are reflected more effectively due to the parties being allocated seats proportionally in relation to votes cast - this also leads to a fairer system as less votes are 'wasted'. e.g. in FPTP all the votes after a certain point could be classified as 'wasted'. Third parties have a better chance of representation There will be a larger variety of choice for voters, as third parties will feel they actually have a chance of gaining some influence, albeit potentially small
