What is the passive voice in German?

The "active" voice is the standard sentence formation you will have learnt, so a subject acting on an object. For example, 'The dog bites the man'. The passive voice changes this, so that the object turns into the subject of the sentence - 'The man is bitten by the dog'. In German, the verb werden is used with the past participle of the main verb to form this type of sentence.
Here is an example of the passive in German: Sie isst das Brot. (active) She eats the bread.Das Brot wird von ihr gegessen. (passive) The bread is eaten by her.As you can see, the verb werden is conjugated to its third person singular form (he/she/it, er/sie/es). The main verb in the active sentence, essen, becomes its past participle and is sent to the end of the sentence. This example is in the present tense, but you can also use the passive in other tenses.
