(AQA, 12 marks) Which of the following had greater impact on the German people? - The Treaty of Versailles - The hyperinflation crisis of 1923. Explain your answer with reference to both events.

The question requires a reference to both events so the student should discuss both events in turn. There should be a detailed paragraph on each event, discussing them both equally. In the opening of each paragraph, they should outline simply what the event was. For example, the Treaty of Versailles was the peace treaty that was signed at the end of the war. This shows historical knowledge of the subject (A01). The student should then go on to discuss and analyse the impact this had (A02). The points should be developed. For example, one of the clauses of the Treaty was that Germany should accept full blame for the war. This then needs to be developed in order to explain how this impacted the people. You could say, for example, that this hurt the nationalist and patriotic sentiments of the German people and in turn, this caused resentment to the German political institution. The student should aim to include at least three developed points for each event. As this question asks which of the two events had a greater impact, the student should, in the conclusion, state decisively which event was more significant. However, the student must recognise the significance of both events and not completely disregard one. The conclusion should be developed, and give a reason as to why the event that they chose is more significant. For example, they could summarise the points that they discussed previously in the essay. No new information should be given in the conclusion.
