How can I write a great personal statement?

A personal statement is like your own unique advertisement. It is meant to sell your skills, experience and personality to potential universities; and convince them that you are the right fit for the course you are applying for. Bear in mind that universities receive thousands of applications – so you need to make sure to really stand out. The best way to do that is to illustrate your skills and enthusiasm for the subject through real life examples - in a tone that emphasises your ability, and yet does not come across as arrogant. Step 1: The What  Really understand what personal qualities and skills this specific university course requires, and make notes about your previous school/work/life experiences that made you develop these skills. For example, if you are applying for a BA in English Literature, suitable examples could include: being a member of a book club (shows you are an avid reader and enjoy analysing and discussing literature), tutoring younger pupils in English (you are able to apply your analytical knowledge of literature to help others), or maybe you enjoy writing yourself (shows creativity and demonstrates your passion for the subject). Step 2: The How Now that you have all your examples lined up, think about how you structure your essay. You should have clear paragraphs and a clear beginning, middle and end. To structure the paragraphs where you discuss your personal experiences, use the ABC method (Action, Benefit, Course). Explain what you did, what skills you gained from it, and how these are applicable to the course you are applying for. Step 3: The Why Don’t forget to make it personal. Even if you have a huge amount of experience in your chosen subject area, universities want to see your passion. Think about your unique whywhy do you really want to study this specific degree? What do you want to do when you finish the course? How will the course bring value to your life and the people around you? I’m sure if you follow these steps you will be able to write an awesome statement that showcases how you are the perfect fit for the course. :)
