How do I answer the classic med school interview question "why would you like to be a doctor rather than a nurse or pharmacist?"?

First, think about the role of the doctor. What have you seen the doctor do on your work experience? Have you seen other healthcare workers in action or researched their roles? We can plot out the different responsibilities these professions have and see where medicine and the doctor fits into this team. Cue interactive discussion to bring out personal experience which is always useful in the interview setting to make things feel less forcedAll of these professions are linked by their desire to help people and have a grounding in science and compassion. Essentially, you need to make clear that you like not only science, patient contact and working in a team (which pharmacists and nurses also do), but also thinking , decision making and being a leader. These are the fundamental qualities needed in a future doctor. It also helps to acknowledge the specific roles of other professions in the healthcare team to prove to your interviewer that you have done your research.
