To what extent do seismic events generate more severe impacts than volcanic events? (20 marks)

In the introduction to your answer you want to set up the question and tell the examiner what your argument is and what you are going to discuss. This is also where you would state any case studies you plan on using in your argument. Definitions of seismic events and volcanic events. This question is asking you to make comparisons between sesimic and volcanic events, meaning you should go into the effects of both in detail before reaching a conclusion as to which is the more severe in terms of impacts. For volcanic events talk about lava flows, volcanic bombs, ash clouds. Bring in a case study to support this and talk about both primary and secondary impacts. Eg. Mt Nyragongo. Sesimic events - ground shaking, soil liquefaction, ruptures, buildings being knocked down, tsunamics. Eg. Indian Ocean tsunami, 2004.Evaluate the impacts of both and recgonise that all events across the world are different and much of the extent to which the impacts are judged as more/less severe than others depends on where the hazard occurs - considering wider factors like socio-economic status of the country, warning systems, government, protection strategies etc.
