Explain how fold mountains are formed.

Fold mountains are a landform and are found at both active destructive plate margins and former destructive plate margins. This means that the two plates are moving together (or colliding). The sedimentary rocks which exist between the two plates are forced upwards and the mountains are created as a result of this build up of rock. Furthermore, there are two combinations of plate collision that can lead to the formation of fold mountains; a continental plate and an oceanic plate (e.g. the Andes in South America) and when two continental plates collide (the Himalayas in Asia). A little closer to home, the Alps are a fold mountain range located in Central Europe- with a highest peak of 4810m at Mont Blanc, which is situated between France and Italy.
