In the context of place, what are endogenous and exogenous factors?

Both endogenous and exogenous factors shape the character of a place. Endogenous factors are internal influences on the identity of a place. These can be related to the location of a settlement, the topography of its settings, and the physical geography of its surroundings. Endogenous factors can also be related to the human characteristics of a place and the activities that occur there, such as its land use, built environment and infrastructure, and demographic and economic characteristics. In contrast, exogenous factors are external influences on the identity of a place. These include the changing nature of farming, migration, young people leaving to work or study, and flows of investment.
