Which verb should be used to translate “to know”?

In Spanish both saber and conocer can be translated into English as “to know”. However, there are differences between how each verb is used.

Conocer is used to express acquaintance or familiarity with people, places or objects. For example, “conozco a la hermana de Pedro”, meaning “I know (or I am acquainted with) Pedro’s sister”.

Saber is used to express learned knowledge, facts or skills. For example, “yo sé tocar el piano”, meaning “I know how to play the piano”.
