How do you answer AQA's GCSE English Language Paper 1 Question 2?

Question 2 will ask about language methods used by the writer to describe a person, place or thing within a text and should take you 10 minutes to complete. This question focuses on AO2: "Explain, comment on and analyse how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers, using relevant subject terminology to support their views." Aim to make three points and have two pieces of language analysis to develop each point. One paragraph should be dedicated to use of language. The next paragraph should focus on any words or phrases that interest you in the text. Your last paragraph will explore sentence forms (simple, compound, complex). In order to access the top range of marks, you must cover all three bullet points mentioned in the question. In your analysis, discuss the effect on the reader and alternative interpretations of your quotation. There is rarely one single meaning to a language / word / sentence form choice made by the author. Only quote from the lines / text specified in the question and that your evidence is embedded in your points and analysis. Sticking it at the end of the line / paragraph will not show evidence of a higher level candidate. Ensure that when writing your answer, you are using subject terminology accurately. This includes word classes such as nouns, pronouns, verbs as well as literary devices such as alliteration, simile, metaphor.
