How do I write a good introduction to an essay?

The purpose of your introduction is to provide an overview of the topics you will discuss within the body of the essay, and present the key points you are going to make, usually in chronological order. Make sure you directly refer to the essay question to show that you have understood it, and clearly state your argument or positioning in relation to it. You should also aim to provide some relevant background information to situate your essay in its appropriate context. The introduction should be clear, concise and engaging.
