To what extent are Medea's action's 'monstrous'? Explore the theme of monstrosity in the play.

Ideally the student should come up with three key themes for this essay on monstrosity e.g. Infanticide, the murder of Jason's new bride and Medea's manipulation of other characters. The introduction should define monstrosity and thus what exactly is being analysed in the essay. It should state the three paragraphs and how these link together as well as placing some context on the play - set in an Ancient Greek society, the patriarchal connotations of this and the fact that it is a tragedy. The main body of the essay should discuss to what extent these three themes are monstrous with a link to how an audience now and in Ancient Greece may perceive them. Link back to the definition of monstrosity and analyse specific language/syntax/rhetoric devices in the play that back up the student's argument. PEA is crucial in the structure of the essay. The conclusion should bring together all the points made and the student should decide to what extent Medea's actions are monstrous.
