Benzene is a planar molecule (all the atoms lie in one plane), and that would also be true of the Kekulé structure. The problem is that C-C single and double bonds are different lengths (C-C: 0.154 nm C=C: 0.134 nm)Enthalpy of hydrogenation is not as exothermic as expected (-120 kJ/mol for each of the 3 C=C bonds -> -360kJ/mol, but the enthalpy of hydrogenation is only -208kJ/mol)Benzene does not decolourise bromine water, meaning there are no C=C double bonds to react in an electrophilic addition reaction
