Translate the following sentence: My friends and I like to help old people when we can. We have no time now because we get a lot of homework.

Things that they are testing here: 'to help' = helfen + DATIVE; 'because' = weil (sends main verb to the END); general adjectival endings and plurals ANSWER(S): Meine Freunde und ich helfen gern (like to can be avoided as a verb construction, and the adverb gern can get the implication of enjoyment across instead) alten Menschen (since helfen takes the dative case, we use the dative endings), wenn wir (das) können. Jetzt haben wir keine Zeit dafür, weil wir viele Hausaufgaben bekommen. (notice that 'weil' sends 'bekommen' to the end of the clause).ALTERNATIVE: It would perhaps be impressive to instead say: Es gefällt mir und meinen Freunden, ... zu helfen - this highlights a knowledge of 'gefallen' as a verb and shows even more knowledge of the dative case (gefallen + DAT). However, the first is perfectly acceptable.> Remember that these questions are always designed to test certain grammatical structures, so spend time trying to carefully identify them.
