Describe how glucose is taken up by cells?

Glucose is absorbed into the bloodstream from the small intestine. In the bloodstream, glucose stimulates insulin release by pancreatic beta cells.Insulin binds to the insulin receptors on other cells - such as liver and muscle cells. This triggers a signal transduction cascade that leads to the fusion of glucose transporter channels (GLUT4) on to the plasma membrane. GLUT4 channels facilitate the diffusion of glucose into the cell, where its utilised in cellular respiration to generate ATP. Any excess glucose is then converted into glycogen for storage by glycogen synthase.
