Describe the process of mitosis

The cell is initially in interphase, where the organelles double, DNA replicates and protein synthesis occurs.Prophase: Chromosomes condense, mitotic spindle begins to form, the nuclear envelope breaks down.Metaphase: Chromosomes are lined up at the equator of the cell, the spindle locks on to the centromere of each chromosome.Anaphase: Spindle fibres shorten, pulling the chromatids apart to opposite poles of the cell.Telophase: A new nuclear envelope reforms around each individual set of chromatids to create new nuclei. The spindle breaks down and the chromosomes uncoil again.Cytokinesis: The cell splits in two, so the two daughter cells have a genetically identical nucleus.
