Firstly, we need to highlight the key words here: EXTENT, KULAKS, MOST IMPORTANT, COLLECTIVISATION. The question is asking you 'to what extent' were the Kulaks the MOST IMPORTANT factor. Remember to always link your point back and answer the question! Remember the three key elements when answering an essay question:
(P) POINT- this should outline your first key point that you are trying to make.(E) EVIDENCE- this should support your initial point using examples and historiography if necessary.(E) EXPLANATION AND SIGNIFICANCE- why is this point important? How does it answer the question? Remember to relate the theme/ point back to the question. In other words, make sure you are answering the question!
Here is an example of a paragraph using P.E.E.-
(P)- The destruction of the kulaks played a significant role in the outcome of Stalin's campaign of forced collectivisation due to the assosciation of the Kulaks with Capitalism.(E)- Stalin required the Kulaks to be exiled to places such as the Gulags in order to establish a long-lasting stable regime which developed the long-term socialism goal in which he needed to achieve. This is supported by Fitzpatrick who stresses the urgency of the USSR's need for fully achieved socialism after the abandoment of NEP (New Economic Plan).(E)- This is significant because the Kulaks represented a Capitalist culture which being a threat to the Communist doctrine enabled Stalin to excercise the monopoly of authority from the Centre onto the process of collective farming as opposed to previously instilled individual farming. The outcome of the destruction of the Kulaks had a significant influence in the prevailment of collective farming on the peasants to a large extent.
Now repeat for all your other points, for example: economic progress, foreign policy...etc!
