Explain why dead plants decay faster in soil which earthworms inhabit compared to soil which lacks any earthworms.

Dead plants are able to decay faster in soil where earthworms live as earthworms disrupt the compact nature of the soil allowing more oxygen to reach the soil. This means there is more aerobic respiration of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi which act to decompose the dead plants therefore meaning they decay quicker.
