How would I structure an essay that analyses an extract from a studied text?

If the essay has a specific question or if it is just analysis, you need to come up with an argument to structure your response. Read through the extract and make sure you understand what is going on. Note down what the main themes and points are and then sum up your argument in a sentence. What does the extract mean and what is it trying to convey? Take a few minutes to plan 3 or 4 main points about the extract that explain your argument and can be backed up by specific parts of the text. Write an introduction that shows you understand the extract and tell the reader what you want to say about it and why this is important. Write a paragraph for each point of the essay and analyse the parts of the extract that prove your point. Analyse the language and techniques used and show that they are important to your argument. Make sure all of your points are linked and relate to your argument to avoid writing too much. Show your awareness of where the extract comes from in relation to the whole text and how it is relevant to the main ideas, and possibly characters, of the text. Conclude by summarising your argument concisely and checking that your work proves this argument throughout.
