Romani Hannibalem timebant. Hannibal vir clarus Africanus erat. quod Romanos non amabat, magnas copias contra Romam ducere et oppidum delere constituit. dux bonus et validus erat. Africani igitur eum magnopere amabant. ubi igitur hastas et scuta paraverunt, e patria discesserunt. in Italiam tandem venerunt. 
The Romans were afraid of Hannibal. Hannibal was a famous African man. Because he did not love the Romans, he decided to lead a great force against Rome and destroy the city/town. He was a good and strong general. Therefore the Africans loved (were loving) him greatly. Thus they prepared their spears and shields, and departed from their homeland. At last they came to Italy.
