Explain why relations grew worse between USA and SU 1943-47.

This would be an essay questions so you would need three factors explaining why relations grew worse between USA and SU in 1943-47. The different factors you could talk about would be the Tehran Conference, the atomic bond and the Iron Curtain speech. You need to make sure to ensure you get the highest mark that each factor links to the next - the link is usually at the end of the paragraph. The general structure for these essays are: Introduction, First Reason (most important, Second Reason, Last Reason (Least Important), and Conclusion. The structure for each paragraph needs to be clear and easy to mark for the examiner and should follow the PEEL structure, which stands for Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Here is a model answer to this question: The most important reason which relations grew worse between the USA and USSR in this period was the Tehran conference. This took place in 1943 and revealed some of the cracks that were beginning to take place in the Grand Alliance. At the Tehran conference there were agreements about spheres of influence, including the idea that there would be an area in which communism was respected, and another where capitalism would dominate. However, the big 3, i.e. USA, GB and USSR could not agree on the future of Germany. Whereas Stalin wanted Germany to be punished for starting WW2 and that Germany should give up territory and pay reparations so that it could not threaten the USSR again. Both Roosevelt and Churchill disagreed as they thought one of the root causes of WW2 was the economic problems which Germany had to endure after its harsh treatment at the end of the First World War. This was really the first disagreement between the Grand Alliance and was therefore the most important because it set the tone for the rest that was to follow. Therefore, the Tehran conference made relations worse because the foundations of the problems to come could be seen at Tehran with the concerns over Germany and the division between capitalism and communism. For example, the concerns soon got worse when it was clear that the USA had an atomic bomb but it was clear from Tehran that there was competition between the two sides.
