Using Shelly’s ‘Frankenstein’ explore the relationships between creators and creations.

The monster can be viewed as Viktor’s alter ego, yet the monster is a ‘blot upon the earth’ implying that having an alter ego is a wrong-doing in itself. A mistake in man is a mistake made within God since ‘God created man in His image’ exhibiting a fragmented relationship not just between Frankenstein and his monster but also between Frankenstein and God, his creator. This ideology opposes ‘The Death of The Author’ witch claims that ‘all identity is lost, beginning with the very identity of the body that writes’. Nevertheless, Shelley’s relationships with her creators are clearly reflected in her work; her mother died ‘following the birth of Mary’ and Shelley spent a lot of hours at her grave but never formed a conventional relationship with her. The ‘limitations of domestic affection’ in Shelley’s own life is remedied through her novel in which she explores the damage that both the creations and their creations can inflict upon one another.
