What is the best way to learn vocbulary?

Everyone has a different way of learning vocabulary, however what's most needed is practice in order for the words to sink in. Here are some ways you can do this:

1) Use your list

This is the most simple option. Take your given list of vocab and test yourself by covering up one of the columns. You get prompted in one language and each time you get it wrong, repeat it to yourself.Highlight problematic words, and make sure you pay particular attention to these when revising.

Tip: Eventually you will learn the first words on your list very well, but the ones towards the end you won't know as well because your attention drains by the time you reach them. Try shaking things up a bit and start by going from the bottom of your list to the top.

2) Make vocab cards.

Simple, fun and can be made very colourful.

Just take some card and write your vocab on one side, with the translation on the other side. Now you have these you can test yourself with a memory game! Put all you cards face down on a table and one by one pick them up. Say the word out aloud and then the Spanish equivalent. If it's right, great! If not, place it back down on the table and come back to it later. Time yourself to see how quickly you can finish all the cards.

Alternatively stick them on walls/cupboards/windows all over your house. You will find that as you walk around your mind will pick up on them and slowly get drilled in, with little effort required!

3) Use online resources

Websites such as languagesonline have gap fillers that can help you recall vocabulary.

Others such as Quizlet (My favourite!) have tons of vocab lists from your course already on their database. You can practice these in a number of ways here. You can simply practice by the same technique as the vocab cards ( they present to you the word , and then it flips over to give you the answer). However it also gives you a practice test (gap fills, match ups, true/ false) and fantastic games! If you are a visual learner, this can help you too as you can add images to match the words.

Tip: Quizlet allows you to enter your own lists. Why not copy your list onto quizlet and it will help you learn more!

KEY TIP: Practice translating in both languages. Spanish -> English AND English -> Spanish. It will help you a lot when you need to think of the words fast!
