Interview Question: What medical work experience have you carried out?

Work experience is a great way to show to demonstrate your interest in medicine, whilst also ensuring that you're aware of some of the more challenging aspects of the career. Whilst the ideal placements would be in hospitals and GP surgeries, there are a lot of other good placements that you would be able to link into different aspects of medicine (e.g. in a care home, school or a lab). In choosing work experience placements, you should try and get placements that cover a wide range of different specialities and skills that are needed in medicine (i.e. not just the speciality you're interested in!) By asking this question, the interviewer wants to know that you have seen and experienced many different aspects of medicine. You should not simply list the places you have been, but rather use this question as an opportunity to reflect on your experiences and what you learned from each placement. For each placement, you should list where it was, what you were doing and use a specific example to highlight a specific skill (e.g. teamwork or communication) that is essential for being a doctor. You should end this question by stating that you are keen to continue your work experience, so that you can experience even more of the profession.
