A group of 44 pupils were asked if they owned a phone or a tablet. 5 people are known to own both 3 said they only owned a tablet 17 said they owned at least a phone A student is picked a random, what is the probability that the student doesn’t have

So in this question, there are 4 main people in this question; those who own ONLY a phone, ONLY a tablet, both a phone or a tablet or NONE. How do you think we could represent this information? Prompt student.- Looking for venn diagram. Explain each part of venn diagram to student( middle-both, outskirt circles are for one item only, outside both is owning none). Draw format and ask student to fill it out. If incorrect - proceed to explanation .So the information tells us 5 own both. This information goes into the middle based on the rules of using a venn diagram. 17 own at least a mobile phone. This means that this is the total number of people who own ONLY a mobile and both a tablet and mobile. Therefore to calculate the amount of people who ONLY have a mobile we do 17-5=12. 3 only own a tablet so to calculate the outside bit of the venn diagram, we would subtract total amount from 44. 44-(12+3+5)=24.(Whiteboard would be used)
