How is a sperm cell adapted to its role?

Since the sperm cell's role is to swim to the egg and fertilise it, it requires a tail for movement. The middle piece is full of mitochondria to provide energy so that the sperm cell can swim and reach the egg. The sperm cell has an acrosome, which is a structure that contains enzymes used to break down the zona pellucida of the egg cell. This enables both nuclei to fuse together, and so fertilisation takes place.
