What is a logarithm?

Logarithms, written in the form logxy, are another type of mathematical 'operation', just like addition or multiplication. Subtraction as the opposite of addition, division is the opposite of multiplication and, likewise, logarithms are the opposite operation to exponentials, (e.g 32 = 9, log39 = 2).Take for example log28 = ?The answer to a logarithm is the exponential power the 'base' of the logarithm (in this case 2) must be given in order to be equal to the bigger number (here, 8). 23 = 8, so therefore log28 = 3.

A circle with centre C has equation x^2 + y^2 + 2x + 6y - 40 = 0 . Express this equation in the form (x - a)^2 + (x - b)^2 = r^2. Find the co-ordinates of C and the radius of the circle.

What is the chain rule?

The curve C has equation: (x-y)^2 = 6x +5y -4. Use Implicit differentiation to find dy/dx in terms of x and y. The point B with coordinates (4, 2) lies on C. The normal to C at B meets the x-axis at point A. Find the x-coordinate of A.
