Describe the role of the thylakoid membrane.

The thylakoid membrane is found within the chloroplast. The photosystems (I and II) are embedded within the membrane itself. It is the site of photophosphorylation and the electron transport chain (ETC), which produces ATP for the light-independent reactions of photosynthesis by the chemiosmosis of H+ ions from the thylakoid membrane to the stroma through the ATPase which is embedded in the membrane. The thylakoid membrane also has a large surface area for more efficient chemiosmosis.
