What is the role of the albedo effect?

The albedo effect is the amount of light a surface reflects. Snow, for example, has a high albedo effect because it does not absorb much light and reflects back a lot of it. Roads, however, have a low albedo effect because they are a darker colour and therefore absorb more light thus retaining more heat and reflect very little light back into the atmosphere.
