No formula should be used for essay writing. Some people like to use the PEE technique, point, example, evidence, and that does work for some people but in order to gain the top marks, your writing must remain authentic, original and smooth. For a lot of people, this formula impedes a student's ability to achieve this. I would say that a great starting point for essay writing is starting a paragraph with your point thesis- what you aim to argue in your paragraph- then provide an example from the text, followed by direct language analysis. Once you have provided all your evidence, you should end your paragraph with a mini conclusion, which can also be used to create your main conclusion at the end and only needs to be about a sentence long but clarifies the thesis that you suggested at the start. I was also told that, in order to get the top marks for GCSE and A-Level, your final sentence needs to be worthy of a mic drop. If you can't walk out with a bang, you need to make it better!
