A washing machine costs £500 in a sale and was reduced by 20%. What was its original price?

Maths is pretty straight forward, you just need to get the key information out the question. So, we have a washing machine that costs £500 on sale. It has been reduced by 20%, so we need to find the original price.Since its been reduced by 20%, we know that the £500 is actually 80%. This is because 100% is the original price, and if its reduced by 20%, the price must be 80% of the original. If 80% is £500, then what must 1% be? To get from 80% to 1% you need to divide it by 80. The same thing must be done to £500. So £500/80 = £6.25. But remember we have only calculated 1% but we need to find 100%. To get from 1% to 100%, you have got to multiply by 100. So the same thing must be done for £6.25. Therefore, £6.25 x 100= £625.
Summery:100%=?20% reduced= 80%= £500Therefore, 1% = £6.25 (divide by 80)So 100%= £625 (multiply by 100)
