A price is decreased by 27% The new price is £1138.80 Work out the original price.

This can be solved by making an equation for the old price.

Make the old price be equal to x.

To find the new price the old price must be multiplied by the percentage of the old price that remains. To find this take the percentage reduction from 100 and divide by 100. (100-27)/100=0.73

So, x*0.73=1138.80

Rearrange to find x

x=1138.80/0.73

x = 1560
