When Chances Peak erupted on the island of Montserrat in 1997, it caused widespread social devastation. 19 people were killed and 7 injured by the eruption’s hazards such as its ash eruption 40,000ft into the sky and pyroclastic flows which hit 100mph and 400oC. However, many people chose to stay at their homes despite an evacuation, so it can be argued that if they had not ignored the warnings there would be fewer social impacts.
