How are alveoli adapted for their function?

The alveoli in the lungs have a high surface area to volume ratio that provide a higher rate of diffusion. They have very thin walls which are one cell thick that allow fast gaseous exchange between the alveoli and capillaries. Also alveoli are surrounded by a large amount of capillaries to allow the maximum amount of oxygen to be diffused in the blood.
