Rationalize this surd: 1/(1+sqrt(3))

Rationalize means to make the value given in its simplest form and so to remove the surd from the denominator of the fraction:We multiply the bottom and the top by the same thing so that the fraction can stay equivalent , we multiply it by this value so that the denominator can undergo the process of completing the square and produce a real number:1/(1+31/2) * (1-31/2)/(1-31/2) =(1-31/2)/(1-3)=(1-31/2)/(-2)=-(1-31/2)/2
