How do I score well on an essay question?

When structuring a response to a history essay question you have to show these crucial components to get high marks:you have to show in depth subject knowledge, this means dates, names, events, figures and statistics.Your essay has to have an analytical structure. You should decide before you start writing what it is your essay will actually be arguing and then this argument should build up throughout the essay until you reach your conclusion. You can make it analytical by comparing the significance, or perhaps arguing for the insignificance of certain factors relating to the question. You have to show a focus on the demands of the question. Paraphrasing the question at the beginning and end of each paragraph can help keep you focused and will be a useful sign post to the examiner that you know what the question is asking you. Your essay has to be organised. Always clearly lead with the argument your trying to make in each paragraph and your setting up a 'road map' of your essay in your introduction can really help keeping it organised.
