Currently, you have to be aged 18 or above to be able to vote in France. Dominique Bertinotti (the Family Minister) suggests having a 'pré-majorité' status where those aged 16-18 can vote in local elections.Jean-Luc Mélenchon (the leader of the left-wing party La France Insoumise) and François Fillon (former Pime Minister from the conservative party Les Republicains) argue for the lowering of the voting age to 16 years. Lionel Jospin (Parti Socialiste), Christine Taubira (parti radical de gauche), Noel Mamère (Verts) want the voting age to be reduced to 17 years old.
In Switzerland, 16 year olds can vote in local elections and, since 2007, 16 year olds in Austria can vote in nation-wide elections.
