Explain why graphite conducts electricity.

Each carbon atom forms 3 (covalent) bonds with other carbon atoms. One electron is left to be free, or as we say de-localised, and therefore can move around freely. Therefore an electrical potential can be applied across the free moving electrons, and electricity can be induced.
