How far does media ownership affect consumption of media texts in the media area you have studied?

Specific Example:Media Area is Film.Case studies are Wonder Woman, Tank432 and Monsters.Media ownership has a large affect on consumption of film; primarily it depends on the budget of the institution. We have studied three films which all had different ability to distribute and exhibit their product; Wonder Woman, Tank432 and Monsters.Films such as Wonder Woman, with a budget of $149 million have an ability to distribute to different countries. Warner Bros had around 90 distributors, which meant the consumption process was first in the cinemas. Wonder woman received $103 million at the opening weekend in US, and a box office of $821.9 million overall. Using the investment in the film, Wonder Woman was available on DVD for around $15 shortly after its theatrical release. Additionally, it could be bought in Blu-Ray. These could be bought in shops such as Sainsbury and ASDA, which distribute home entertainment. Large part of film consumption involves digital technology, nowadays the film can be accessed on platforms such as ITunes and Netflix, where you can pay and rent the film for home entertainment. Moreover, WW was released on Sky premiere in 2017. The consumption is available online, many websites exhibit the films in good quality and for free. This can cause a problem for the institution as sometimes the film is illegally downloaded. Piracy is a large issue for institutions, as they don’t receive pay for online downloaded films. Media ownership doesn’t have as large of an affect on consumption of film online, as all kinds of films circulate in the web no matter which company produced it and what the budget was. However, the recognisability of an institution will have some result on the online consumption, because primarily, people will be looking for a good quality and well-known production. For Tank432 the media ownership has a large affect on the consumption of the film. Firstly, because Bellstone is a small, independent company they did not get a cinematic release and went straight to DVD. Tank 432, similarly to WW was available in M&S, ASDA and other shopping venues, which sell Blu-Ray and DVD as a home entertainment. However, when Tank432 was released on Netflix, it got many negative reviews and wasn’t popular amongst the users. Yet, as the director Finn Bruce says, “any publicity is good for the film, negative of positive” so in this sense he considers that the film genre simply didn’t suit the audience. Additionally, with the online age and technological convergence, the film became available for watching online. Like WW, it can be viewed on websites which don’t require payment.Monsters is also a film of a low budget, independent ownership Vertigo. Although, the budget was only $500,000, they had a cinematic release distributing over 68 countries. The revenue counts up to $4 million, which is extremely successful for a small institution. Monsters was released on DVD and Blu-Ray, like other two films, the DVD had special features such as behind the scenes and interview with actors. Monsters was available for consumption on Netflix and ITunes as well as online. As WW and Tank432, Monsters ownership did not have a massive effect on its consumption online because nowadays internet gives free publicity and films are available for all audiences. To conclude, I believe media ownership has a big affect on consumption in the early stage such as theatrical release, however in the internet the status of an institution and budget of the film have less significance, due to free publicity and availability.
